Texas DMV or DPS: who handles what?
Many states use one DMV for licenses and vehicles. Texas splits the work between two agencies, so a DMV appointment in Texas starts with one question: is it about you, or about your vehicle?

| If you need | Go to | How to book |
|---|---|---|
| A driver license, ID card, permit, REAL ID, road test or CDL service | Texas DPS driver license office | DPS appointment scheduler, up to six months ahead |
| Vehicle registration, a title transfer or temporary registration | Your county tax office | Check your county office; many renewals are online with TxDMV |
| A title error fix or apportioned (IRP) registration | TxDMV Regional Service Center | Same day or the next two business days |
TxDMV itself does not issue driver licenses or ID cards. Its Regional Service Centers handle a short list of special vehicle cases, covered in the vehicle section.
How to make a Texas DMV appointment
There are two ways to set one up, and the right one depends on your task.
For a driver license, ID or permit
Book a Texas DPS appointment on the DPS scheduler at txdpsscheduler.com. Every in-office driver license and ID service in Texas runs by appointment only, from permits and REAL ID to driving tests.
For vehicle registration or a title
Contact your county tax assessor-collector office. Check your county office’s appointment rules before you go. Many registration renewals can also be finished online through TxDMV without any visit.
How the DPS scheduler works
The Texas DPS appointment scheduler is the booking system DPS uses for every driver license office in the state. You use it to book a new DPS appointment online, look at the one you have, move it to another day or cancel it. It is available in English and Spanish.
Book in six steps
- Open the scheduler. Go to txdpsscheduler.com, the scheduler DPS links from its own site, and choose English or Spanish.
- Answer the first questions. Say whether you have held a Texas license or ID before, so the scheduler shows the right services.
- Pick the exact service. Choose the task that matches yours. If it can be finished online instead, the scheduler tells you so.
- Choose an office, date and time. Compare more than one nearby office. Open dates and times can differ a lot between locations.
- Confirm your appointment. Opt in to email or text reminders if you want them. Log back in any time to see your booking.
- Get ready for the visit. Check your documents and your arrival time. See how to get ready.
Is this the official scheduler website?
Yes. The official Texas DPS appointment scheduler is at txdpsscheduler.com, the address DPS links from its appointments page. DPS lists fees for licenses and ID cards, but no fee for booking. If a website asks you to pay just to book or “find” an appointment, you are paying for a step you can do yourself on the official scheduler.
How far ahead can you book?
You can book up to six months in advance. Most offices also release a limited number of same-day appointments online. If the first office you check is full, look at other offices nearby before you settle for a date months away.
Before you book: many renewals, replacements and address changes do not need an office visit at all. Check what you can do online first.
Which DMV appointment do you need?
Choose your task to see whether you need an office visit, can finish it online, or should go to your county DMV instead.
Choose a task to see if it needs a DPS office visit, can be done online, or belongs to your county tax office instead.
A first Texas license needs an office visit. Book the first-time license option and check your documents and fee before you go.
A learner permit needs an office visit. Check the age rules, the written test and the driver education steps before you book.
If you renewed in person last time, are under 79 and meet the other rules, you can renew online or by phone instead.
Many people can replace a lost or damaged license online or by DPS Virtual Issuance. Book an office visit only if you must.
Address changes can often be done online or by DPS Virtual Issuance. Book an office visit only if you do not qualify.
A first Texas ID card needs an office visit. Texas lets you hold a driver license or an ID card, but never both at the same time.
A REAL ID has a star in the top right corner. New cards need an office visit; a card without the star may get it at renewal.
A road test is an in-office license service, so you book it on the DPS scheduler too. Check the test rules and your vehicle before test day.
You can drive on a valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days after moving. Book DPS for the license; the car goes to your county.
CDL services are in-office license services booked on the DPS scheduler. Check the CDL steps before you book.
Vehicle registration and title transfers go to your county tax office, not DPS. Many registrations can be renewed online.
Manage your Texas DMV appointment
You manage it in the same DPS scheduler you used to book it. Keep the details you entered when booking, because you need them to log back in.

Reschedule a DPS appointment
- Open the scheduler and log back in.
- Choose a new office, date or time.
- Confirm the new appointment.
Your old appointment cancels automatically once the new one is confirmed. Keep your current slot until you find a better one.
Cancel a DPS appointment online
- Open the scheduler and log back in.
- Find the appointment you booked.
- Cancel it in the scheduler.
Yes, you can cancel a DPS appointment online. Cancelling as soon as you know frees the slot for someone else.
Look up or confirm your appointment
To check your Texas DMV appointment status, open the scheduler and log back in with the same details you booked with. Your confirmed date, time and office are shown there. If you opted in to email or text notifications, keep those messages too, so your booking details are easy to find.
Missed your appointment or running late?
DPS asks you to arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before your appointment. If you are more than 30 minutes late, the appointment is cancelled and you need to book a new one. Enter your time below to see your arrival window.
No DPS appointments available?
A full calendar at your usual office does not mean you have to wait months. These steps can get you an earlier slot.
- Check if you need the office at allThe scheduler and online services can save you the trip.
- Widen your searchOpen dates differ between offices, so compare two or three nearby locations in the scheduler.
- Look for same-day slotsMost offices offer a limited number of same-day slots online, so check the scheduler more than once.

Can you walk in without an appointment?
Not for regular service. All in-office driver license and ID services at DPS are by appointment only. If you arrive without one, the self-service kiosk inside the office can book a same-day slot if one is open, or a slot for another day or office.
Get ready for your visit
A missing step is the most common reason for a second trip. Run through this before you leave.
- Confirm your slotLog back in to the scheduler and check the office, date and time you booked.

Skip the DMV office
Not every Texas DMV appointment has to happen at an office. Many renewals, replacements and address changes can be finished online, by phone or by video.

Renew online or by phone
You can usually renew online at texas.gov or by phone at 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639). Check every statement that is true for you:
Based on your answers, plan on an in-person renewal. Book an office visit, or see if Virtual Issuance below fits a simple renewal.
You meet the main rules for online or phone renewal. Have your audit number, the last four of your SSN and a credit card.
DPS Virtual Issuance
Virtual Issuance lets eligible Texans finish simple renewals, replacements and address changes on a phone or tablet. You verify your identity, join a virtual queue and meet a DPS License and Permit Specialist on a secure video appointment. Drivers 79 and older must renew in person at a driver license office.
For every option and what each one costs, see how to renew a Texas driver license online, by phone or in person. If your card is lost or damaged, see how to replace a lost or damaged license; if you moved, here is how to update the address on your license.
Vehicle appointments at your county DMV
If your Texas DMV appointment is about a car, truck or motorcycle, you need your county tax assessor-collector office, not DPS. TxDMV calls these offices “Your Local Tax Office & DMV”, and they handle most title and registration work.
Registration and renewals
TxDMV lets you renew registration and change the address on your vehicle record online. For temporary registration or other in-person registration work, contact your county office.
Title transfers
Title transfers after you buy, sell or receive a vehicle are handled by your county office. Check whether your county books appointments for title work before you go.
Placards and special cases
County offices also provide copies of registration receipts, and many also issue disabled parking placards. TxDMV Regional Service Centers handle special cases such as title errors and apportioned (IRP) registration, and their appointments open for the current business day and the next two business days.
Opens the official TxDMV page for the county you choose.
Each vehicle task has its own walkthrough: registering or renewing a vehicle in Texas, transferring a car title after a sale or gift, and getting a copy of a lost title.
Find a DMV office near you
Need a Texas DMV appointment close to home? For licenses and IDs, the scheduler lets you pick an office, so compare openings for two or three near you. For vehicles, use the county finder above.
Our city pages list local offices with hours and phone numbers. For licenses and IDs, see DPS appointments in Houston, booking a DPS slot in Dallas and Austin DPS offices and hours, plus Fort Worth DPS appointments, DPS offices in Lubbock and Corpus Christi DPS appointments. In San Antonio and El Paso, start with the DMV offices in San Antonio or the El Paso DMV and DPS offices.
DPS fee calculator
DPS lists no fee for booking the appointment itself, only fees for the card you get. Choose your service to see the current DPS fee and how long the card lasts.
Fees include a $1 administrative fee, which is not charged on mail-in transactions. Confirm the latest amount with DPS before you go.
Other license and ID appointments
New drivers usually start with the learner permit and written test, then come back to book the road test. If you already hold a license from another state, see how to switch an out-of-state license to Texas.
Need a card that is not a driver license? Read about getting a Texas ID card, or what it takes to get a REAL ID with the star. Commercial drivers can find the CDL permit, skills test and handbook in one place, and anyone unsure about their card can check whether a Texas license is valid.
